The Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga is the largest denomination of Christianity in the Kingdom of Tonga. It is a Methodist denomination that broke away from the London Missionary Society (LMS) in 1839. The Free Wesleyan Church was founded by Rev. Shirley Waldemar Baker and the Reverend Dr. Frederick Edward Muir in Nuku’alofa, Tonga, and has been a major influencer in the Kingdom of Tonga since its foundation.

The Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga was founded in 1839 by Rev. Shirley Waldemar Baker and the Reverend Dr. Frederick Edward Muir. The two, inspired by the teachings of the Methodist Church, broke away from the London Missionary Society. The denomination quickly spread throughout Tonga, and by 1844 had members in all of Tonga’s islands. The Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga was closely tied to the Kings of Tonga through its early years. The first King of Tonga, Taufa’ahau, adopted the denomination as the official religion of the Kingdom of Tonga. As such, the Church was used to help introduce other western aspects to the Kingdom such as western laws and education. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Tonga.
