The Free Wesleyan Church, Longolongo, in Tonga, is the largest denomination of Protestant Christianity in the Kingdom of Tonga. It was founded in 1884 by the Rev. Shirley Waldemar Baker, who was sent by the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society of the United Kingdom. The church was established to meet the spiritual needs of the Tongan people, and it has grown to become the largest Christian denomination in Tonga with over 20,000 followers, accounting for nearly one-third of the total population. The Free Wesleyan Church, Longolongo, is committed to the evangelical missionary witness, and places a strong emphasis on preaching, teaching, evangelism, and social service. The church has opened several clinics and kindergartens, and runs a number of initiatives to address poverty and social issues such as domestic violence and injustice. The church has a distinctive Tongan form of worship featuring loud singing, clapping, and dancing. Its services are held in both the Tongan language and English, and often include a mixture of traditional Tongan music, hymns, and modern Christian worship songs. The Free Wesleyan Church, Longolongo, is closely associated with the Tongan royal family and is seen as a symbol of Tongan identity and culture, and the Church and its members often take an active role in national and international events. It also has close ties to the Evangelical Fellowship of the Pacific, an ecumenical body which promotes evangelical ministry in the Pacific region.
