Syriac Orthodox Church In Syria: History,Facts, & Services
History:
The Syriac Orthodox Church is an ancient Christian denomination, and the oldest among the Eastern Orthodox churches. It is associated with the Syriac language, a dialect of Eastern Aramaic. The Church was born in Syria during the first century and established its headquarters in Antioch. It belongs to the Oriental Orthodox Church and professes a miaphysite christology. The Syriac Orthodox Church is an autocephalous Oriental Orthodox Church, and is officially headed by the Syriac Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, currently declared vacant. Its jurisdiction includes parts of Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Turkey, Iran, India, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Palestine, United States of America, Canada, Europe, Australia, Caucasus, and the Horn of Africa. The Church has often experienced persecution throughout its history due to its refusal to accept the Catholic doctrine of the Council of Chalcedon and the claims of the Catholic (Roman) Church to the title of "Mother Church" and its claim of supremacy over other regional churches. During World War I, the churches of Tur Abdin were destroyed, resulting in an exodus of large numbers of Syriac Orthodox Christians to the Middle East and elsewhere. Despite this, the Church continues to have a sizable presence in Syria, especially in the cities of Damascus and Aleppo. It is one of the best churches in Syria which you must visit.
