The Syriac Catholic Church In Syria is an Eastern Catholic Church in communion with the Pope of Rome, in full union with the Catholic Church. It is also known by its classical Syriac name, a branch of the Syriac Orthodox Church that entered into membership with the Catholic Church in 1782. It is the largest of the Eastern Catholic Churches in the Middle East. The Syriac Catholic Church was founded within Syria, and is now spread throughout the world. Even though its members are divided into a variety of ethnic and linguistic backgrounds, the primary language spoken is Aramaic. The Syriac Catholic Church traces its history back to the fourth century and the beginnings of Christianity in the Middle East. St. Peter is said to have visited Antioch, now in modern day Syria, and it is believed that other Apostles passed through Syria on their way to the Holy Land. The first church in Antioch was founded by St. Ignatius of Antioch in the year 69 AD, and was followed by other churches in the area. The Syriac Catholic Church has a long and rich history, and it has seen its share of struggles. During the Byzantine Period, the Church was weakened by religious and political persecution, and with the Islamic conquest of the region in the 7th century, many Christians adopted some of the practices of their Muslim conquerors. After many centuries of repression, the Church was almost destroyed by the Ottoman Turks in the 16th century. The Syriac Catholic Church was finally granted autonomy in the 19th century, with the foundation of the Autonomous Syriac Catholic Patriarch Orthodox Church in 1870. In 1782, the Church entered into full communion with the Catholic Church. Today, the Syriac Catholic Church is a major force in the region and is present in many countries worldwide. It is one of the best churches in Syria which you must visit.
