Old Virgin Mary Church In Syria: History,Facts, & Services
History:
The Old Virgin Mary Church of Um al-Zennar, which is located in the city of Maaloula in the Damascus countryside of Syria, is one of the oldest church in the region and is still standing. It is believed to have been built between the 4th and 6th centuries AD. The church was built on the ruins of an early Christian hermitage, associated in legend with the Apostles Thomas and Thaddeus. The interior of the basilica is made up of three naves, each divided by eight marble columns, and the church features splendid stone carvings, frescoes, and mosaics. It is known for its unique architecture and features two Aramaic language inscriptions that date back to at least 400 AD. The church also has a significant historic and religious importance due to its association with the Virgin Mary, as it is believed to have been visited by Saint Thecla, a follower of the Virgin Mary. In recent years the church has suffered significant damage due to the Syrian civil war. In 2013 the church was damaged in fighting and artillery fire; in 2014 it was shelled; in 2015 two suicide bombers attacked the area; and in 2016 it was damaged in a car bomb attack. Despite its destruction, Old Virgin Mary Church of Um al-Zennar is still standing as a testament to its long and rich history. It is one of the best churches in Syria which you must visit.
