Varberg Fortress is a Swedish coastal fortress situated in Varberg, Halland County, in western Sweden. It is a well-preserved, star-shaped fort, which has been an important part of Sweden's strategic defense system since its original construction in the 13th century. The fort has undergone many changes throughout its history, and today serves mainly as a tourist destination and a symbol of Sweden's proud military history. The earliest evidence of a fortification at the current site of Varberg Fortress dates back to the 13th century. The original structure was likely a circular earthen embankment surrounding an inner wooden defense tower. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the original earthen embankment was replaced with a larger, more formidable stone fort. In 1788, a powerful stone bastion was constructed on the northern side of the fort. In the 19th century, Varberg grew in importance as the defensive center of the region.
