History:

The Uppsala University Library was established in 1620 under the patronage of King Gustavus Adolphus. The first library was the Baroque Archive, which housed thousands of books donated to the university from individuals, academic institutions, and foreign countries. In 1683, the University Library was moved from the old main university building into the main building, which is now the Gustavianum building. This building housed the collections and the library staff until 1914 when a new library building was built. The library then underwent a major transformation in the 1960’s and 1970’s, when it was organized from a paper-based system into a digital one. The library was one of the first in the world to acquire an automated library system, which was connected to the university's main computer. Today, the Uppsala University Library is still one of the largest libraries in Europe. It houses over 6 million volumes of books, journals, and manuscripts, making it one of the largest collections in Europe. The library also provides access to most of the major scholarly and research databases from around the world, as well as digital resources.
