History:

Skara Cathedral is a medieval cathedral located in the Swedish municipality of Skara. The current structure dates to the 13th century, although the location itself has been used for sacred services since the 8th century. Over the years, the cathedral has undergone several renovations and additions, including a Gothic tower which was added in the 14th century and two statues of St. Olav, both placed in 1865. The first documented church in Skara dates back to the 8th century. This small wooden structure was replaced in the mid-1100s by a stone church. Further renovations occurred in the mid- to late-1200s, when the current structure of Skara Cathedral was built. This new church was dedicated to Saint Olav, the patron saint of Norway. In the centuries that followed, several additions were made to the church, the most notable of which was a Gothic tower added in the early 1300s. Further renovations occurred in the mid-1600s, when the interior of the cathedral was white-washed and outfitted with some baroque details. Several statues of St. Olav were added in 1865. In 1943, Skara Cathedral was officially consecrated as a cathedral. The building was damaged during an arson attack in 1994, but it has since been restored to its pre-damage state.
