History:

The Palace of the Grand Masters of the Knights of Rhodes is located within the ancient walls of the City of Rhodes in Greece. The palace was built by the Knights of St.John of Jerusalem during their extended occupation of the island of Rhodes from 1309-1523. The Knights of St. John were originally based on the island of Rhodes in the mid-13th century, and in 1291 moved their headquarters to Acre, present-day Israel. When the Turks expelled the Knights from Acre in 1309, they returned to the island of Rhodes, and in 1310 established a new base in Rhodes, including the building of a massive fortress-like palace. Although the main palace structure remained largely intact for centuries it underwent many restorations over the centuries, including extensive repairs after an earthquake in 1735. Today, the palace is open to the public and has been partially restored. It contains an extensive collection of relics and artifacts from the Knights’ occupation, as well as detailed replicas of the living quarters and dining spaces of the manor.
