History:

Mariestad Cathedral (Swedish: Mariestad Domkyrka) is the church of the Diocese of Skara and the seat of the Bishop of Skara, located in the Swedish city of Mariestad. It is a Lutheran Church of Sweden church, and has been since its completion in 1617. Originally, the church was built as a simple wooden structure on the site of an earlier wooden church, which was destroyed by fire in 1611. It was consecrated in 1617 by Archbishop Jakob Ulfsson Thott. However, it was not until 1862 that the church got its present layout and look, with a tall spire. The renovation of the church was conducted by architect Axel Kumlien, a renowned designer of many of Sweden's churches. The building of the spire was completed in 1876. Today, the church is a popular place of pilgrimage for those in search of spiritual guidance. The Mariestad Cathedral has a small museum, which features displays on local history and artifacts from the church. It also has a crypt under the sanctuary, where the bodies of many of the local citizens are interred. In 2013, renovation works started on the church. The church is also home to a number of music festivals, concerts, and other cultural events. Visit one of the famous monuments of Sweden with your friends and family.
