History:

The Kaliningrad Amber Museum in Kaliningrad, Russia is situated in the historic building of a former 17th century Prussian Upper Gymnasium built in the late Renaissance style in the heart of the Old Town of Kaliningrad. The museum houses an array of Baltic amber specimens, fossils, crystals, and other artifacts. The origin of the museum dates back to the natural history collections of Friedrich Gubert, a Prussian official, during the 19th century. After his death in 1837, his collection was taken to Berlin's Natural History Museum founded by King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. Gubert's Baltic amber collection stayed there until 1925, when it was transfered to the Zoological Museum in Königsberg. In 1948, the Krzysztof Sierzputowski Amber Room was opened at the E.F. Schilling Russian Post and Communications Museum in Kaliningrad. This Room presented over 1400 specimens of different Baltic amber specimens, and became one of the most important amber collections in Europe. In the 1970s, the collection started to be transferred to the Kaliningrad Amber Museum, and in 1991, the museum was officially opened.
