The statue of The Cossack in Rostov-on-Don is a well-known monument in the center of the city, easily recognizable by locals and visitors alike. It was erected in 1895, on the initiative of the merchant Prigara, and given to the city as a personal gift from Tsar Nicholas II. The monument is dedicated to the many Cossacks who fought in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78, and the heroic efforts of the local Cossacks during this conflict. The copper statue stands atop a granite plinth and is 8 meters high. It was a gift from the Tsar, and was designed in St. Petersburg by the sculptors S. I. Bachrach and N. A. Konyshev and cast in Munich by the famous artist, Franz Euler. The monument is seen as a symbol of courage, honor, heroism, and loyalty, and has been a source of pride and admiration for local Rostovites for over a century.
