Vaduvavaththai Veerapathrar Temple is located in the village of Vaduvavaththai, Puloly, in Sri Lanka. The temple is omposed of three linked shrines, dedicated to the gods Murugan, Shiva, and Durga. The primary deity of the temple is Murugan, otherwise known as the God of War. The presiding deity of the temple is Veerarathnar, who is said to have earned the title of ‘Veera’ for his bravery during a battle. Worship at the temple takes the form of traditional offerings, including flowers, fruits, and other items, and daily pooja (devotional prayers and offerings). Devotees pay their respects to Murugan and his associates by presenting garlands, lighting lamps, and making an offering of fruit, milk, and water. On special days, priests may conduct a yagna (a ritual generally involving offerings of ghee, clarified butter, and fire). In addition to pooja, devotees offer a variety of other services and practices associated with Murugan, such as chanting hymns and offering food to Murugan’s associates. Special days, when Murugan or other deities are worshipped in the temple, attract larger crowds than usual. On these days, the deities are clothed in colorful garments and decorated with jewelry and garlands. There are various festivals and tradition associated with the temple. These include the Karthigai (October/November), Thai Pusam (January/February), Dussehra (September/October), and Chitra (April).
