History:
The church was established by Father Augustin Vilattanayagam, a Belgian Jesuit. The Parish Compound, which houses the church and related buildings was later built in 1906 and renovated in 2008. The church is home to many religious traditions such as the Novena and Marian processions. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Srilanka.
