History:
St. Sylvester's Church was built in 1558 by early Portuguese missionaries. According to historical records, it was the first Christian church in the Ettukala layover. The church is believed to be named after Pope Sylvester II, who served as the Bishop of Rome from 991-1001. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Srilanka.

The church is one of Sri Lanka's oldest churches and is listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Register. It boasts a distinctive Portuguese Baroque architecture, and is often referred to as the “Lankan Miniature Lisbon”. It features a number of ancient artifacts dating back to the 16th century, including the relics of Saints, a baptismal font and a 17th century crucifix.
