History:
The Parish of St. Mary’s was initially founded by the Jesuits in 1873. The church building was designed by the architect Father Appere and was completed in 1891. The church was destroyed by a fire in 1914 and rebuilt soon after. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Srilanka.
