St. Anthony's Church - Rotawewa Church In Srilanka is believed to be one of the oldest churches in Sri Lanka. It is believed to be built in the late 16th century by the Portuguese colonists. The church is associated with the story of a pious and loyal Christian woman (St. Antã), who went forth in search of a monk to educate her people about Christianity and the church is believed to be named in her honour. The church is situated in Rotawewa, a small village close to the city of Kurunegala, in the North Western Province of Sri Lanka. It is one of the best churches in Srilanka which you must visit.

History:

 According to a manuscript believed to be written by Jesuit fathers, the church was built in 1559 by the Portuguese, but the locals believe that the church was originally built before this date. The church was later completely renovated in the 18th century. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Srilanka.

 The church is a smaller version of the São Bento Monastery, which was built in Lisbon by the Portuguese in 1554 during the then-recent Counter-Reformation. The church is traditionally dedicated to the missionary St. Anthony of Porto. The church is one of the oldest Catholic churches in the country and possibly one of the oldest churches in South Asia – the Portuguese having arrived in Sri Lanka in the 15th century.
