History:
dates back to 18th century, This sacred temple of Lord Shiva, considered as the protector of all the fishermen in this area, is located in one of the remote islands of Jaffna; Puliyantivu, Analaitivu in the northern province of Sri Lanka. People from different parts of the country visit the temple in order to get blessings from the Lord. The temple is constructed on a style which is considered as typical of Analaitivu island style. the original structure was not huge with the Mandapam and Vimana made of wood. Since there are no archaeological evidences of older constructions, it is said to have been established in 18th century. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, one of the main deities of the Hindu faith and was constructed on the lines of a Tirukovil (temple with several shrines) in Analaitivu. The deity here is worshipped in the form of Nageswarar or Vayu Thataar(the Lord of wind). The main feature of this temple is that actual worship is done in only one shrine, where Lord Shiva is seen as the wind God. Apart from the main shrine, there are also several mini shrines dedicated to different Hindu gods like Vinayagar, Murukan, Ambal, and Chandikeswar. People believe that Lord Shiva protects their family from any kind of danger and provides them with a good life. Worship Method:
Sri Nageswaran Temple follows the Hindu tradition of festival worship, daily worship and spiritual practices. During the festivals, the temple offers a variety of rituals and elaborate poojas as per the Hindu tradition. Special poojas are performed on Saturdays. On Tuesdays and Fridays, devotees can perform the abishekam, or holy bath to Lord Shiva. The temple also performs special poojas on Amavasya and Pournami days. Devotees can also have their wishes fulfilled through the special pujas and rituals performed during the festivals. At daily worships, devotees offer flowers, fruits and incense to Lord Shiva and seek his blessings. Spiritual practices such as Sankalpa, Japa and meditation are also performed at the temple.
