Alagollewa Calvary Shrine is an important religious destination for Roman Catholics in Sri Lanka. Located in the scenic town of Negombo in the western coast of the island nation, the shrine is believed to be built in the late 19th century. The shrine is dedicated to the Crucifixion of Christ and the mysteries of the Rosary. It pays homage to the fifty scenes of the Passion of Christ and has dedicated chapels to St. Francis Xavier and St. Padre Pio. It is one of the best churches in Srilanka which you must visit.

History:

 The shrine is said to have origins in a miraculous event that took place in the forest near the city of Negombo at around 1876. The legend has it that a frail and feeble man stumbled upon a huge stone cross hidden amongst the shadows of the trees. Comforted by the sight of Lord Christ’s agony, he built a small chapel around the cross in 1876 and declared it as the house of the Lord. Later, the place known as Alagollewa Calvary Shrine gained immense popularity and devotees from all parts of the country started to flock there. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Srilanka.
