St. Francis Assisi Church in Srilanka is an ancient Catholic Church located in the city of Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. It was built in late 17th century by an Italian priest Antonio Baldacchini, at the request of King Vimaladharmasuriya I who gave generous gifts to finance its construction. It is one of the oldest churches in Sri Lanka and is a memorial to the first Christian priests who arrived in the country in 1590 from the shores of Goa in southern India. It is one of the best churches in Srilanka which you must visit.

History:

 The church was destroyed by the Portuguese in 1619 AD, but was later re-built in 1702 by the Prince of Anuradhapura at the request of the King. It has been restored and maintained many times over the years and continues to function as a place of worship. The church is listed as an ancient monument in the records of Sri Lanka's Archaeological Department. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Srilanka.
