ST. THOMAS' CHURCH - MATALE In Srilanka: History,Facts, & Services

St. Thomas' Church – Matale is one of the oldest churches in Sri Lanka. The church was established in 1784 by a Dutch missionary working with the local population to spread Christianity throughout the country. Built on a hilltop overlooking the rest of the town, it was originally a Catholic church but later adopted Anglicanism. The church is part of the Diocese of Kurunegala of the Church of Ceylon, and the oldest surviving Christian structure in Matale. As one of the oldest churches in Sri Lanka, St. Thomas' Church has a rich and interesting history. The church was first established by Dutch missionary, Father Herman Wolters in 1784, and for the next 85 years, the church remained under the Roman Catholic Order. However, in 1869, the church was handed over to the Anglican Church and was rededicated as St. Thomas' Church. It remains a place of historical importance as it was the first church in Matale and the second in Kandy district, after St. Paul's Cathedral in Kandy. St. Thomas' Church offers a number of services including Sunday worship services, Bible studies, religious activities, and funerals. The church also provides outreach services to those in need in the community. Visitors are welcome to attend services and can also explore the grounds of the church.
