History:

Saint Mary's Church was built by the Dutch in 1864 at the request of the local residents. During the Portuguese period some of the local residents were arrested and tortured and others were forcibly converted to Catholicism. After this incident, the local residents requested a Catholic Church to be built in the area. The Dutch acceded to this request and constructed the church. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Srilanka.
