, St. Helena's Church - Hiripokuna is an ancient Catholic Church and a popular pilgrimage site in Sri Lanka. The church is located approximately 20 km away from Colombo in Kandy district. It is believed that in 1618 an Italian pilgrim, Saint Helena, built the church. The church is a simple but attractive building situated on a small hill at the base of the Hunnasgiriya Mountain Range overlooking a sprawling lake in the vicinity. It is one of the best churches in Srilanka which you must visit.

History:

 St Helena's Church is closely associated with the Italian pilgrim, Helena de Rossi. She was a wealthy Roman aristocrat sent by Pope Clement VIII in 1618 on a mission to strengthen the Catholic faith in Sri Lanka. During her mission, she was said to have built the Church of St. Helena in Hiripokuna. It is also believed that Helena distributed wealth and other goods to the poor after her pilgrimage. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Srilanka.

 St Helena's Church is also known as the 'Pahiyangala Church' due to its close proximity to a unique prehistoric site known as 'Pahiyangala'. The Church is a popular destination for tourists, pilgrims and devotees because of its long history and cultural significance. It is believed that Helena appointed a priest at the Church to take care of it before leaving.

The Church offers a range of services such as Mass, Baptism and document authentication. It also hosts traditional festivals such as 'Ginige' (wedding ceremonies) and 'Kulawasam' (funerals) that are exceedingly popular in the region. The Church also conducts regular classes on religion and holds retreats and seminars throughout the year. In addition, it also distributes morning and evening meals to the poor and needy.This beautiful church in Srilanka has made a lot of significance in the past.
