Though Ravana was very powerful, he could not move the idol from its place despite several attempts. Furious, Ravana tried to break the idol, but it didn’t budge. In his anger, Ravana stamped one of the feet and left. Later, when people of Chilaw went to clear the temple premises, they discovered that the foot was broken and had the imprint of Ravana’s fingerprint. Keeping with the tradition, the Chilaw people place the head of Ravana at the feet of the idol every time temple rituals are performed. The temple is famous for its annual festival, the Thiruveedhi Utsavam. It is celebrated every year on the day after Diwali. The temple is thronged with pilgrims from all parts of Sri Lanka as well as India. During the celebrations, the idol is taken out in a procession for a village tour.
