, Kovitkadavai, Thunnalai (Sanskrit: कोवित्कडवाई, थुन्नालाई) is an ancient site located in the northern part of Sri Lanka. It has been identified with the city of Rajarata, the original capital of ancient Lanka, and is believed to have been occupied from the 4th century BC until the 5th century AD. It was known as Kondurva in the Ramayana and is associated with Ravana, the demon king of Lanka. The site was discovered in 1871 by the British archaeologist A.W. Woolner and excavation began in 1886. The mound consists of several layers of habitation, and contained remains of an ancient palace, residential complexes, terracotta pots and painted pottery. Inscriptions on pottery and stone revealed information about the ancient kings and their royal families indicating that the mound was a major royal residence from the 5th century BC to the 2nd century BC. Today, Kovitkadavai, Thunnalai is a protected archaeological site and a part of the North Central Province World Heritage Site. It is one of the best temple in SriLanka which you must visit.

Kovitkadavai or Thunnalai is a popular form of worship practiced in Sri Lanka. It involves worshipping the guardian deity of the temple and reciting certain prayers or mantras. The devotee then offers cooked or uncooked rice as a sign of dedication and devotion. The priest will then perform a ritual offering of milk, curd, honey and clarified butter.
