Worship Method:

Kathiresan Temple in Colombo, Sri Lanka, is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Krishna. The temple usually hosts day-long elaborate religious ceremonies, including the traditional arati, pradakshina and Ganapati puja. The worship at the temple is conducted according to the agama sastras, which regulate the rituals and details of the Hindu temple worship. The main ritual followed is the arati, which involves the priest performing specific actions, chanting mantras, and offering precious items (such as flowers, fruits, and incense) to the deity. Following the arati, devotees are then invited to circumambulate the deity three times, as a sign of reverence and supplication. All of these rituals are performed with the accompaniment of traditional Tamil devotional songs. The temple also offers a variety of prasadam for the worshippers which range from sweet dishes, to flowers or fruit. The prasadam is then distributed to the devotees by the priests. There is also an offering of coconut water every evening after the temple closes. Once the puja is finished, devotees then perform pradakshina, meaning walking clock wise around the temple in order to pay respect to the deity. This is an integral part of ritual worship in Hinduism and is believed to cleanse physical and mental impurities from the individual. The worship rituals at the Kathiresan temple is often concluded with the traditional ‘Aarti’, in which devotees form a group and sway before the deity, while singing devotional mantras. All of these rituals should be performed with utmost devotion and respect, and it is believed that the temple will grant blessings and wishes to the devotees if the rituals are done properly.
