St. John's Maroon Church was founded in 1826 when the first group of Maroons arrived in Sierra Leone. The church was initially built of mud and straw and since then, renovations and repairs have been made over the years. In 1978, church land was purchased and St. John's Maroon Church was officially established. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Sierra-Leone.
