The church was founded in 1806, but the first permanent structure on the site was built between 1845 and 1848. The building, which still stands today, is an impressive example of 19th-century West African architecture. It underwent an extensive renovation in 1985-86, and is now a protected monument of Sierra Leone. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Sierra-Leone.
