Sierra Leone In Sierra-Leone: History,Facts, & Services

Sierra Leone is a country located along the coast of West Africa. It is bordered by Guinea to the north and east, Liberia to the southeast, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west and southwest. The capital and largest city is Freetown. Sierra Leone has a long history dating back to the 1500s, when Portuguese traders first arrived in the region. In the 1800s, the area came under British influence and Sierra Leone was officially declared a colony in 1808. The colony was abolished in 1961 and Sierra Leone gained its independence from Britain with a parliamentary system of government. Civil war caused much destruction and displacement in the 1990s, but in 2002 the war officially ended. Today, Sierra Leone is home to a diverse population of roughly 7.5 million people composed of a range of linguistic and ethnic backgrounds. The official languages are English and Krio, a creole language that has grown out of English and African languages. The main ethnic groups in the country are the Temne, the Mende, the Limba, and the Kono. The economy of Sierra Leone is largely dependent on its natural resources, particularly diamonds and rutile, as well as remittances and foreign aid. The country has made advances in recent years, albeit from a very low base, in providing basic services (such as health care and education) to its citizens. These improvements have been supported by initiatives such as the Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Free Movement of Persons Protocol, which aims to ensure the free movement of people, goods, and services across West Africa.
