The church was originally part of the historic Barony of Cartsburn, which was established in the 12th century by King David I. The first Church of Scotland building on the site was built in 1691, and the current building replaced it in 1818. The Mount Kirk was served by numerous ministers and elder over the years, with the last being the Rev. Stan Mortimer. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Scotland.
