Mount Siani Baptist Church St Lucia is a spiritual center of the Baptist Church denomination located in the Caribbean island nation of Saint Lucia. Established in 1780, the church has a long history of involvement in the country's social, economic, and political landscape and is considered to be the oldest of its kind in the entire Caribbean region. The church is currently headed by elder Brother Fox who has been leading the church since 1985. Mount Siani Baptist Church Saint Lucia History The Mount Siani Baptist Church was founded in 1780 by Rev. David Bakewell, an English missionary who came to the island four years earlier. At the time, the island country had recently taxed white colonial Protestants and the church served an integral role in the island’s resistance to the oppressive taxation. The church eventually served as a sanctuary to those who formed a secret self-government, which was eventually known as the Republic of the Soufrière. Mount Siani Baptist Church St Lucia Facts • The Mount Siani Baptist Church is the oldest Baptist Church in the Caribbean region. • It is also the oldest building in the Soufrière area, and it’s believed to have been built in the late 1700s. • The current building is the third edition of the church and was actually built by local craftsmen in 1876. • The church also served as a defense point against invaders. • It is also home to a baptismal font made from the local stone jasper which is said to originate from the Soufriere volcano.
