History:

The National Gallery of Australia is Australia’s national art museum, located in Canberra, the capital of Australia. It was established in 1967 by the Australian Government and has accumulated one of the greatest collections of Australian and international art anywhere. The Gallery has been dedicated to the history, art and culture of Australia, and its collection comprises more than 173,000 works of art from over 35 countries. The National Gallery of Australia officially opened in 1982. At the time it was one of the largest and most ambitious public galleries ever built in Australia. The building was designed by Alan Powell Architects and the courtyard garden was a collaboration between architect Stephen Kennon and landscape architect Elizabeth Mossop. The Gallery was designed to showcase Indigenous Australian art, as well as important works from the European masters, American Pop Art, and Asian art, among other styles. It includes works from Australia, Europe, the United States, Africa, Asia and the Pacific. It is today home to some of the most iconic Australian artworks, such as Tom Roberts' Shearing the Rams (1890) and Sidney Nolan's Ned Kelly series (1946-47) as well as important works by international artists such as Picasso and Monet.
