The Monastery of Saint Anthony in the Red Sea was founded by three Coptic Christian monks from Egypt in the 4th century. The monastery was built on a hill overlooking the Red Sea and the monks quickly dedicated it to the hermit Saint Anthony, who had retired to a cave nearby. The small monastery, which could only house up to 30 monks, survives to this day and has been an important place for Orthodox Christians for centuries.
