Richard Allen, a former slave, and Absalom Jones, a free black man, were two of the original founders of the First African Methodist Episcopal Church. After decades of being treated as second-class citizens in the white-dominated Philadelphia religious landscape, the founders decided to build their own church. In 1800, after being denied the right to worship in a white church, Allen and other members of the Free African Society (FAS) petitioned the Methodist Episcopal church to let them become members.
