History:
Villa Romana is one of the most important archaeological remains of the Roman period in Lazio. It is believed to have been built in the 1st century BC by a wealthy Roman family or a governor as a luxurious agricultural estate. The villa was occupied continuously until the 5th century AD when it was abandoned and forgotten. Its ruins were rediscovered in 1965. The archaeological excavations revealed a large rural complex with an impressive courtyard, gardens and terraces, which were decorated with statues, mosaics, and other ornamental elements. The remains of various buildings, such as dwellings, a sauna, a bakery, and storage rooms, were also found.
