The Statue of the Tiber river with Romulus and Remus is a monumental bronze of Ancient Rome that was created by the Italian sculptor Lorenzo Bartolini in 1820. It depicts Romulus and Remus, the legendary founders of Rome, being suckled by a she-wolf. It stands at the bank of the Tiber River: hence its name.
Overview:

The 12-meter tall bronze sculpture is one of the iconic representatives of the Neoclassical sculptural genre. In the center of the figure, it portrays Remus and Romulus in the act of being suckled by the she-wolf — wolf suckling. The figures of Remus and Romulus are sculpted in a "realistic" manner, while the she-wolf is depicted in a solemn manner.
Facts:

The statue was cast in the Senese foundry, owned by Leonardo Bistolfi, and it was unveiled in 1820. Currently, the statue stands in the Ponte Sisto area of Rome, close to the Tiber river. It is estimated to weigh around 13 tons.
History:

The statue was commissioned by Pope Pius VII for the basilica of St. Peter, however, it was later donated to Pope Leo XII who decided to place it near the Tiber river. The significance of the statue was to remind the Romans of their ancient founders and the importance of their city.
Travel:

Due to its grandiose size, the statue of the Tiber river with Romulus and Remus is a favorite spot for photographs. It can best be reached by taking Line 8 of the Metro service and then walking for about 5 minutes until you reach Ponte Sisto. There is no entry fee to visit this historic statue.
