Discover - Sicily–Rome American Cemetery and Memorial - Fact, History and Travel Information

Sicily–Rome American Cemetery and Memorial is a World War II Allied military cemetery outside of Anzio, Italy. The cemetery contains the remains of 7,861 American service personnel, including sailors, soldiers, and airmen from the United States Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard; and smaller numbers from 33 other nations, most of whom died during the Allied offensive in Italy and southern France between July 1943 and May 1945. These cemeteries also commemorate the service of servicemen buried elsewhere in Europe and North Africa, who are remembered by name on the Tablets of the Missing. The cemetery is managed by the American Battle Monuments Commission. The memorial contains a chapel, a pool, and several statues, including one of St. George and a guardian angel. There is a burial area connected to the memorial, plus a non-sectarian chapel.
