Santa Maria del Buon Viaggio is a 17th-century church located in the Trastevere district of central Rome. It is renowned for its Baroque façade and elegant interior, as well as its name which literally means “Our Lady of the Good Journey”.

• Santa Maria del Buon Viaggio is an active Catholic Church in Rome. • The church was built in 1643 by the initiative of Pope Alexander VII. • It’s front façade is adorned by two Corinthian columns, topped by pediment and statues. • It has a single nave with paintings, frescos, and sculptures inside. • It is the site of a clandestine graveyard for the unfortunate victims of the plague.
History:
The church was built in 1643 by Pope Alexander VII, who wanted to dedicate it to the Virgin Mary to protect travelers on the via della Lungara road. Unfortunately, this Pope’s tenure was brief, and the church was only completed by Pope Innocent XII, who added its decorative Baroque façade. It was also during his pontificate that the Church became known as Our Lady of the Good Journey. Throughout the Baroque period, the church was a place of pilgrimage for Rome’s deprived, and served as a refuge for many religious orders in the city.

The nearest Metro stop is Circo Massimo, from which the Church can be reached in a matter of minutes. The Church is open daily and offers a unique insight into the history of Rome and Baroque architecture.
