Discover - Santa Francesca Romana - Fact, History and Travel Information

Santa Francesca Romana is one of the most important Roman church, located near the Roman Forum and the Colosseum in the heart of Rome. It was erected in the 4th century and is dedicated to Francisca Romana, an important Italian lay saint. The church is renowned for its Byzantine and Romanesque architecture and its treasures, which include an important cycle of frescoes depicting scenes of the life of Santa Francesca Romana, as well as numerous Renaissance and Baroque works of art. A few steps away from the church stands the renowned Santa Francesca Romana Monastery, which was established by Francisca Romana's parents in 847 AD. The monastery houses the relics of Santa Francesca Romana and is a place of pilgrimage and spiritual contemplation. Not to be missed is the beautiful courtyard of the monastery, where regular concerts are held, allowing visitors to admire the superb Baroque architecture. Visitors to the church can also admire the many works of art inside and around it, including the portico with its 13th century sculpted baldacchino, fragments of a fresco, and a 15th century terracotta crucifix. Despite the recent influx of tourists, the church and its surrounding area remains an important place of devotion and worship for the local community, who have kept the ancient traditions alive.
