It was a part of the lavish suburban villa complex of Domitian at Prima Porta on the outskirts of modern-day Rome. The complex also included a large two-story palace and a garden with statues, fountains, and a grotto. The theater was used for theatrical performances, gladiator battles, and Christian martyrdoms over the centuries. It was abandoned in the 5th century due to the fall of the Roman Empire.
