History:
The Roman theater of the Villa of Domitian was built in the late 1st century AD, around 87-90 AD, by the powerful Roman Emperor Domitian. It was a part of the lavish suburban villa complex of Domitian at Prima Porta on the outskirts of modern-day Rome. The complex also included a large two-story palace and a garden with statues, fountains, and a grotto. The theater was used for theatrical performances, gladiator battles, and Christian martyrdoms over the centuries. It was abandoned in the 5th century due to the fall of the Roman Empire. Travel:
The Roman theater of the Villa of Domitian is located in the town of Prima Porta, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of Rome. It is accessible by train from Rome Termini Station to Prima Porta Station. The theater is open from Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm, and admission is free. Visitors can explore the ruins of the large theater and admire the well-preserved Roman architecture. There is also a nearby archaeological park with other ruins from the Domitian villa complex. The nearby Uccelliera Park offers many scenic trails for a pleasant walk in the area.
