Overview:

The Park of Archaeological and Naturalistic Sources Di Ostia Antica - Villa Romana Costiera di Pianabella is a protected area of international importance in the Province of Rome and is part of the European network of protected areas (Natura 2000). The park includes a vast archaeological area rich in testimonies of ancient Roman civilization, the coastline of the Tiber River and the pine forest of Castel Fusano.
Facts:

• The Park covers an area of 1,238 hectares and in 2017 it was recognized as a Protected Area of International Importance by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) • It is an area of great historical and archaeological significance: inside the park are the ruins of Ostia Antica, the ancient port of Rome, and four protected agricultural villas from the Republican period • It is also a protected area for nature: here you can find a variety of plant and animal species, both endemic and migratory • Inside the park there are the remains of two medieval castles: the Sixteenth century Tower of Pirgo and the Thirteenth century Castle of Punta Lungarini
History:

The area has been inhabited since the 6th century B.C. by the Etruscans but it was during the Roman Empire when it really flourished as a port city. It was also the site of an important battle in 55 B.C. between Julius Caesar and the troops of the King of Egypt. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the area was abandoned until the 11th century AD when two castles were built by the Pope's troops. Throughout the centuries, the area has been home to a variety of cultures, people and wildlife.
Travel:

The Park is open every day from 9am to 8pm and it costs about 8 euros for adults to enter. There are also guided tours available in English and Italian that cost about 18 euros. Inside the park you can find a range of activities such as walking and biking trails, archaeological sites, educational activities and even an observatory. The Park also offers several activities for children including a science center and a mini-zoo.
