The Capilla Arzobispal de la Inmaculada Concepción (archbishop chapel of the Immaculate Conception) is an ecclesiastical building located in Mexico City's Historic Center and one of the most important religious monuments in the Mexican capital. It was built in the late 18th century, between 1776 and 1791, and is the official residence of the Archdiocese of Mexico. Its design is neoclassical, with domes and its façade is decorated with Corinthian columns, volutes, and a gable with Latin cross. Its interior decoration is highly ornate with gold-plated frames, wooden altarpieces and Gothic-style Herrerian furniture, as well as numerous sculptures located in various chapels. History The Capilla Arzobispal de la Inmaculada Concepción was built under the initiative of the then Archbishop of Mexico, Manuel Antonio Gómez de Sandoval y Rojas (1748-1797). Construction was finished in 1791 and the building was dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. Some of its architects were Ignacio Castera, Manuel Tolsá and Andrés García Camba. Facts • The chapel was declared a National Monument of Mexico in 1933. • It served as a presidential balcony for official ceremonies in the 19th century. • It was scarcely used in the second half of the 20th century and until recently underwent restorative works. Services The Capilla Arzobispal de la Inmaculada Concepción is open to the public most Sundays and Mondays and can be visited by schedule. The chapel is still used for religious purposes, serving as a venue for ordinations and other official celebrations.
