History:

dates back to 1724, when the Bishopric of Ramnic established a parish in Douai’s district. This parish was of special importance to the Catholic’s faith in the region, and few years later, a church was erected in the spot. It was dedicated to Saint Sacrament. After World War I, the area was settled by Romanians, and the Carol I Bridge (formerly called King Ferdinand Bridge) was built in 1934. The current building was designed by French architect Paul Soustre in the 20th century, and was inaugurated in 1938. It has an interesting Neo-Romanesque style, and it is an example of a “memento mori” type, meaning that its architecture, decorations and sculptures carry various references to death, with the intention to remind people of its inevitability. The church’s interior is decorated with icons and religious frescos by renowned artists such as Jean Miró, Paul Weiler, Max Herman, Raffaele Pellicciari, Paul Parfalea and also by the French painter Pierre Trousset.
