History:

Plaza de Armas (Main Square) of Huancayo is located in the center of Huancayo in the Junín region of Peru. It has served as a meeting place for the residents of Huancayo since the mid-nineteenth century. Huancayo was founded in 1539 after Francisco Pizarro conquered the region, and Plaza de Armas was a central part of the original city plan. The Plaza was originally known as the Plaza Mayor (Chief Square), and was the site of a weekly market. Over the centuries, it has been remodeled several times. In 1890, a covered portico was added to provide protection from the elements. This portico was destroyed by fire in 1934 when a parade float caught fire. In 1960, the pentagonal plaza was remodeled once again, adding fountains and a statue of General Juan Oyanguren, a former Governor of Junín. Today, Plaza de Armas still serves as the center of Huancayo. It is a popular destination for both locals and visitors, hosting concerts, festivals, and other events. The square is also surrounded by some of the city's most important buildings, including the Huancayo Cathedral, which was built in 1878.
