History:

Huancayo Cathedral, located in the city of Huancayo in the Peruvian department of Junín, is the head of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Huancayo. The cathedral dates back to the early 16th century when evangelization of the Huancayo region through the Catholic faith began by Franciscan monks. The first chapel dedicated to Saint Philomena and located in the center of Huancayo was built in 1541. By the 17th century the chapel had become too small for the growing population and a larger structure was required. The new cathedral, named Catedral de San Sebastián, was built on the same spot and was completed in 1777. The current structure is the result of renovations made in the 19th century in a Neoclassical style. In 1869, an earthquake left much of Huancayo in ruins including the cathedral. Reconstruction began in 1875 and completed in 1881. Notably, the bell tower, a signature feature of this cathedral, was built in 1942 and recently underwent further renovations and expansions. The cathedral also boasts a museum and library with an important collection of documents and manuscripts relating to Huancayo’s history.
