History:

Cerro Azul is part of the Cañete Province in Peru. The Cerro Azul archaeological site is located on top of a hill near the town of Leóncio Prado, about 50km to the northwest of the city of Cañete. The hill overlooks the valley of the Cañete River and is part of the coastal plain of the Lima Region. Cerro Azul was first occupied by local pre-Inca cultures around 1500 BC and was used for the worshipping of the dead. During Pre-Inca times, the site may have been a funerary center. Cerro Azul later became a religious and administrative site of the Inca Empire. Remains of an Inca site and agricultural center can be found at the site, including several terraces and aqueducts. The site is also home to a unique and ancient form of artwork known as Stone Pizarros. The artwork, engraved onto stones by unknown artists, depicts various symbols and shapes related to archaeological remains, the nature of the hill, and the activities of the people who lived on or near the hill. Some of these engravings are believed to date back to around 3000 BC. In the mid-20th century, Cerro Azul was declared a National Historic Monument by the Peruvian government. The site is now managed by the Ministry of Culture and open to visitors. It is also possible to visit the area around Cerro Azul, and explore its surrounding rural and urban communities, including El Molino, El Porvenir, and Cerro Azul itself.
