History:
The Cathedral of Santiago the Apostle is one of the oldest churches in Panama. It was constructed in the late 16th century by Spanish settlers, who brought much of their cultural heritage to the region. The original construction was made entirely of wood, but by the 18th century it had been mostly replaced by adobe blocks. Initially named after Saint James the Elder, it was later renamed Santiago the Apostle. It is a vibrant cultural center of the local Catholic community, and houses a variety of artifacts and antiques, including several original paintings by renowned artist Chaú Veraguano.
