The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Panamá In Panama is one of the seven ecclesiastical provinces in Panama. It is the second largest Roman Catholic province in the country and is headed by a Metropolitan Archbishop. It was established on 29 January 1962 and covers an area of 643 square kilometers. It is divided into seven dioceses, namely Panama City, Darien, Chitré, Las Tablas, David, Penonomé, and Santa Rosa de Aguiles. The Metropolitan Archbishop of Panamá is Most Reverend José Domingo Ulloa Mendieta, S.D.B., who is assisted by six Auxiliary Bishops and five Regional Auxiliary Bishops. The main center of the diocese is the Cathedral of San Fernando in Panama City, where the Archbishop officiates regular Sunday Mass as well as other special masses and events. The diocese has several other churches, hospitals, schools, charitable works, and a number of religious orders that offer various forms of service to the local people. The diocese also works in close collaboration with the Vatican to promote and spread its Apostolic mission and to strengthen the faith of the people.
