History:

The Church of Saint Porphyrius was built in the mid-sixth century in the Byzantine architectural tradition, likely to replace an earlier church which was destroyed. There is some evidence to suggest that the structure was originally part of a much larger complex. Its builders were likely inspired by the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, which was built around the same time. The Church of Saint Porphyrius was abandoned in the early seventeenth century, likely due to the decline of religious activity in the area due to Ottoman rule and the dangers posed by the nomadic Bedouin tribes. By the mid-eighteenth century, the church was in ruins and largely forgotten. In the late nineteenth century, the Church of Saint Porphyrius was rediscovered and restored by the French archaeologist Clermont-Ganneau, who identified it as the burial place of the fourth-century martyr Saint Porphyrius of Gaza. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Palestine.
