Åsane Gamle Kirke In Norway: History,Facts, & Services
Åsane Gamle Kirke (English: Åsane Old Church) is a historic church in Bergen, Norway, dating back to the 12th century. During its history, the church has been a Lutheran parish church, a monastery, and a ruin. It is a popular tourist attraction in Bergen, especially because of its history and its views of the city.
The building, which dates from 1186, was built in the Romanesque style and is the oldest still-standing building in Bergen. It was built of stone and had a single nave with an apse on the east side. By the 14th century, the church was given to the Augustine monastery of Bergen, which had it rebuilt in Gothic style and extended with a choir to the west side. In 1536, the monastery was suppressed by the Lutheran Church of Norway, and Åsane Gamle Kirke became a parish church, until it was burned by British troops in 1799. The ruins of the building were abandoned and left to deteriorate until they were rediscovered and restored in the 1880s.
The church has a seating capacity of 100 people, and includes several both preserved and reconstructed elements from the Romanesque and Gothic periods. In 2004, the church is again used for worship services and other services, such as baptism and wedding ceremonies. It is also used as a venue for concerts and cultural events, and is a popular tourist destination.
